Duterte OKs creation of task force vs media killings

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has signed Administrative Order (AO) 1, creating a presidential task force against media killings, a Palace official said on Thursday, October 13.

"The President signed the Administrative Order 1, creating the presidential task force on violations of the right to life, liberty, and security of the members of the media," Communications Secretary Martin Andanar told a press conference.

Andanar said the President signed the AO last October 11.

The task force will be chaired by Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II and co-chaired by Andanar.

Other members are Local Government Secretary Ismael Sueño, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Solicitor General Jose Calida, Philippine National Police Director General Ronald dela Rosa, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief-of-staff General Ricardo Visaya, National Bureau of Investigation Director Dante Gierran, and the executive director of Presidential Human Rights Committee.

Andanar said the task force will hold a meeting after Duterte’s scheduled visit to China on October 19 to 21.

Invited observers and resource persons are the chairmen of the Commission on Human Rights, the Ombudsman, president of the National Press Club, president of the National Union of Journalist of the Philippines, president of the Publishers of the Associations of the Philippines Inc., and the Philippine Press Institute.

According to the report by the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture, the Philippines ranked third in the world with most journalists killed in the line of duty.

The previous administrations have formed bodies to address the summary executions among journalists.

Andanar earlier said the existing committee is tasked to investigate extrajudicial killings in general while the new order would focus on media killings. (Sunnex)
