OFW in Kuwait commits suicide

DAVAO -- A Filipino working as a household service worker (HSW), commonly known as domestic helper, in Kuwait committed suicide by jumping off the building where she lived last May 22.

The victim, according to the ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau, was identified as Helen Riobuya Sarocam, 41, a resident of Monkayo in Compostela Valley.

She was said to be cleaning the window of her room on the building's fifth floor in Hawally, Kuwait when she jumped off. She crashed down a windshield of a car parked below and died on the spot.

Sarocam has been suffering from severe homesickness and has allegedly asked for help from the Philippine Embassy to go home since she said she cannot complete her two–year contract. She was supposed to fly home last May 24.

Sarocam arrived in Kuwait on December 19, 2014, but was returned to her agency by her first employer after she said that she was not getting along well with her lady employer.

She was again brought back to her agency by her second employer after she allegedly complained of severe homesickness last May 20.

She was made to execute an affidavit at the Philippine Embassy in Fahia the following day, stating the reasons she wanted to go home. Among the reasons she listed was that she missed her children and family.

She was due to fly home on the 24th but she died 5 a.m. of May 22.

Her roommates in the agency’s accommodation in Hawally said they did not suspect anything and that they were used to Sacoram cleaning the windows every day, and so they did not mind her.

A roommate was still able to grab her hand as she fell, but she struggled to free herself and fell.

Sarocam was described by her roommates as very quiet and that she kept to herself. She only ate once since she moved in last May 20, her roommates said, and kept herself busy cleaning the room.

The report said that Philippine Charge d’ Affaires Atty. Raul Dado already visited the agency accommodation and talked with the agency secretary and the roommates. (Sun.Star Davao)
