Number of kids sleeping on streets declines

AFTER charges were filed against parents of the minors who were found sleeping on Davao City streets two months ago, the City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) recorded a decrease in the number of children who stay outdoors at nighttime.

Gina A. Moron, CSSDO child and youth focal/technical person, said few minors are now caught going stray at night after the warning of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

The social workers of each barangay, in coordination with the barangay police, are doing constant monitoring at the community level to prevent another circumstance.

"We can easily monitor these children now because of the presence of social workers and barangay police at night time. Since then, a significant decrease on number of minors has been observed," Moron told Sun.Star Davao on Friday.

Moron recalled that cases were pressed against the parents of the three minors who were found sleeping at the sidewalk of Loyola Street in Barrio Obrero, Davao City in March this year.

Duterte found the kids sleeping under a parked vehicle.

"It served as a lesson to irresponsible parents," she said.

Of the three found sleeping in Obrero, two are siblings -- a boy, 8, and a girl, 5, children of a single mother. The other child is a six-year-old boy.

The children, who are under the custody of CSSDO, came from different areas in the city.
