Davraa gets sacks of rice; Antique guv promises fish, too

DELEGATES of the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) can now heave a sigh of relief after the last batch of mattresses were delivered late Thursday in their billeting quatters at Julian Fullon Pacificador National School and M. Buyco Elementary School in Funda, Hamtic in Antique Province.

Department of Education (DepEd) Davao Region spokesperson Jenielito Atillo, in a phone interview with SunStar Davao Friday, April 21, said the delegation of over 600 athletes, coaches, and officials now have 700 mats.

The first batch of 300 mats arrived Monday evening, according to DepEd Davao regional sports coordinator Antonio Pasquito, Jr., as Davraa delegates made do with carton sheets as floormats to sleep on since arriving in Hamtic past midnight Saturday, April 15.

Atillo said, "Antique Governor Rhodora Cadiao also visited us today and provided us 20 sacks of rice. The governor also promised to provide the delegation with two banyeras of fish everyday."

The fish supply will start in the opener of the Palarong Pambansa 2017 on Sunday until it closes on April 29.

Cadiao was accompanied by DepEd assistant secretary Luisito Umali and DepEd School Sports Division head Cesar Abalon during yesterday's turnover of rice sacks.

Though Atillo was uncertain, a SunStar Davao source said the rest of the regions will also be given sacks of rice and supply of fish.

"Unannounced iyang pagbisita. Nagtuyok jud tingali siya sa mga regions (The governor and her party came unannounced. She might have made her rounds among the regions)," Atillo added.

He also said that opening ceremonies on Sunday will start at 3 p.m. at the Binirayan Sports Complex.

President Rodrigo Duterte is reportedly the keynote guest speaker of the annual sportsfest for student-athletes.
