Poe wants probe into defective MRT train coaches from China

SENATOR Grace Poe said Thursday that she would file a resolution pushing the Senate to investigate the P3.8 billion worth of defective train coaches that were bought from a Chinese supplier.

Poe cited the report of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) that the 48 Metro Rail Transit (MRT) train coaches ordered from Dalian, China have defective signalling system and cannot be used in the next three years.

Poe said the quality of the signalling system is "terrible" and will put to risk the lives of many commuters.

"Ang problema nito ay ang kalidad ng signalling system, kaya sinasabi ng DOTr na hindi na nila gagamitin ang 48 trains. Matetengga ang P3.8 billion," Poe said.

The senator said former transport officials in the previous administration must be held liable "considering that this money of the Filipino people has been wasted and to be able to teach them a lesson not to disregard our commuter safety."

Poe also urged Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade to build up the case against the concerned officials and file the necessary criminal and administrative charges against them.

The senator is set to file the resolution when Congress resumes sessions on May 2. (SunStar Philippines)
