Oro kick boxers win 2 bronzes

CAGAYAN de Oro kick boxers Alcer Lozada and Ely Fernandez added more feathers in their caps.

This, after Lozada and Fernandez pulled a bronze medal each in the recently-concluded World Association of Kickboxing Organization (Wako) Asian Kickboxing Championships in Turkmenistan.

The two prize fighters made it to the semifinal round in their respective weight categories, though it did not turn out well for the 31-year-old Lozada who suffered a knockout against a much bigger Iranian foe in the second round of their 71 kilograms (kgs) semifinal duel.

“Dako kaayo ang kontra ni kuya Alcer. Taas, dako ug maskulado kaayo (Kuya Alcer’s opponent was bigger and taller than him),” shared Fernandez.

Lozada fell first in the first round with the Iranian’s four-combination quick punches that sent him to the ropes.

Then, the Iranian pulled the exclamation mark with a solid punch that sent Lozada to the canvas and the bell.

A much taller opponent also overpowered the 19-year-old Fernandez in their 51 kgs semifinal match.

The Kyrgyzstan fighter stands at six-foot-two, dwarfing the five-foot-six Ely.

“A good exposure for the two of them, though we’re hoping they get better in many more interesting fights ahead,” said Beh Barothy Hung, Fernandez’s manager and owner of the Mindanao Ultimate Mixed Martial Arts.

Recently, Lozada won a silver medal each in the World Muay Thai Championships and World Muay Boran last March in Thailand.

Fernandez, on the other hand, picked a silver in the World Muay Boran, the only tourney in Thailand that he competed in March.
