SECRETARY Jesus Dureza of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) is the guest of honor of the 119th Independence Day celebration on Monday, June 12, in Zamboanga City.
The activities, spearheaded by the City Government, will kick off 7 a.m. at the Plaza Rizal, fronting City Hall, with the flag raising ceremony.
The 119th Independence Day celebration is anchored on the theme “Kalayaan 2017: Pagbabagong Sama-Samang Balikatin.”
Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said the flag raising ceremony will be followed by the wreath laying rites and a short program.
The flag raising ceremony will be simultaneously done in all cities and provinces with Zamboanga City as one of the key cities to be featured during the nationwide coverage of the event.
City government officials and employees as well as representatives from different government and non-government agencies, including civic organizations and people’s organizations are set to participate in the event.
Independence Day or “Araw ng Kalayaan” celebrates the nation’s independence from decades of Spanish rule.
Historical records show that Philippine independence was formally proclaimed on June 12, 1898 with the reading of the Proclamation of Independence in Kawit, Cavite.
The Proclamation was prepared and read by Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista and was signed by 98 delegates, including General Emilio Aguinaldo. (Bong Garcia/SunStar Philippines)
