LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Mayor Romeo Salda is wishing for peace and order in Marawi City and expressed hope that it will regain its freedom from the Maute Terrorist Group.
“I wish that the crisis in Marawi City will end so that our fellow Filipinos living there will enjoy their independence,” Salda said.
The mayor added he is happy with the country celebrating its 119th year of independence and prayed this will last for the next generation to enjoy.
“We are lucky that here in our municipality we can enjoy today’s celebration of independence. We are not only free from the colonizers but we are also free from terrorist attack like what is happening in Marawi City,” he added.
One of the most significant dates in the Philippines' history is June 12, 1898, when the country attained independence from 300 years of Spanish rule. Philippine independence was formally proclaimed on June 12, 1898 with the reading of the Proclamation of Independence in Kawit, Cavite.
The Proclamation was prepared and read by Ambriosio Rianzares Bautista and was signed by 98 delegates, including General Emilio Aguinaldo.
Mayor Salda also wished for the country to be free from poverty, corruption and criminality.
“I wished that our country will also gain its independence from this (terroristic) event so that we can fast-track our progress,” he said.
Salda further said officials of La Trinidad are doing their best to serve the entire municipality in order for the town to gain its own independence from poverty, criminality and corruption.
The 119th Philippine independence day celebration was held at the municipal grounds attended by all government employees and officials, representatives from the private sector and religious leaders who prayed for the town and the country as a whole.
This year’s theme for the Independence Day celebration is “Kalayaan 2017: Pagbabagong Sama-Samang Balikatin.” (PNA)
