DUE to the ongoing crisis in Marawi City, the Hotel, Restaurant Association of Baguio City (HRAB) held a seminar about terrorism and security.
With a theme “Awareness is the Best Deterrence,” the seminar focused on how to be prepared for a possible terrorist attack.
Andrew Pinero, HRAB media officer, said the seminar is timely because of the attacks in Marawi City and Resorts World Manila.
“We feel it’s timely after what is happening right now in the different parts of the country, knowing fully well that the city of Baguio is a prime tourist destination and we have to be prepared. We have to let the stakeholders know in case things that are happening in different parts of the country happen here in Baguio,” Pinero said.
Resource speakers include Turkish lecturer Dr. Cihangir Hans Arslan, who talked about Islamic Radicalization, emphasizing the beliefs and value system of Islam and how it does not promote extremists or terrorism.
He emphasized that Islam is a religion of peace to promote peace and kindness to others.
Arslan has lived in the Philippines for 10 years and understands the stations and sector of prejudice against his religion.
He hopes that people would not box Muslims into the terrorist category and people would engage in a dialogue that would promote understanding of their faith.
He mentioned factors such as internal divides, failure of Muslim governments, scientific backwardness and quest for Islamic identity for people to be susceptible to religious extremists and terrorism.
Former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Stephen Cutler talked on global terrorism, focusing on how hotel and restaurant establishments should be aware of what is happening for them to be fully prepared.
“Being aware of terrorist events helps your organization understand what is going on today, actually helps us to prepare and how to protect our guests and our staff,” Cutler said.
Cutler adds establishments should focus in knowing what they are dealing with and have knowledge on the security measures of their establishments.
Establishments should know if their windows and doors easily open, how many fire exits they have, fire extinguishers and if their sprinklers work. A business or establishment’s goal should be making their guests feel safe. (Louie Anne Mapa, UC Intern)
