British chamber: Iloilo City is economic hotspot in Visayas

ILOILO City is considered as one of the economic hotspots for investments which will be highlighted during the Iloilo Trade Mission hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce Philippines (BCCP) on March 8 to 9, said an official.

“Major cities like Clark in Northern Luzon, Davao and Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao, and Iloilo in the Visayas, are economic hotspots for investments,” BCCP chairman Chris Nelson stated.

Nelson invited Mayor Jose Espinosa III to be one of the keynote speakers during the Trade and Investment Forum at Richmonde Hotel in Mandurriao district on March 8.

“We are glad that British investors will be coming over to hold the forum and at the same time look for possible industry where they can invest. This event is one great way of showing what Iloilo City can offer and attract investments to further boost our local economy,” Espinosa said.

He added that investments could provide more job opportunities to Ilonggos.

The City Government hosted on March 7 the mayor's welcome dinner for Her Majesty's Ambassador Daniel Pruce, UK Trade and Investment Philippines Director Michael Yelland Moon and British delegation of BCCP members at the newly-restored Elizalde y Cia Building which will soon be converted into Museum of Economic History near the City Hall.

Nelson said the event aims to encourage more UK companies to set foot in the Philippines and for existing companies to expand operation in the Visayas, particularly in Iloilo. He cited the forecasted region’s higher average growth rate than the national target.

With the theme “Promoting Regional Development Towards Prosperity For All,” the initiative aims to facilitate a dialogue between government and private sectors.

On March 9, the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)-Information Technology (IT)-Academe group will have a visit to UK BPO company Reed Elsevier at 9 to 10 a.m. that will be followed by meeting with various universities such as University of the Philippines-Visayas, Central Philippine University, University of San Agustin, and Iloilo Science and Technology University at 10 a.m. to 12 nn.

An afternoon rolling tour will run through major centers including Iloilo Commercial Port Complex, Global Business Power Corporation coal-fired plant, Megaworld Iloilo Business Park, Ayala Land, and Gaisano Iloilo City Center. (PR)
