2 dead, 5 injured as truck plows through houses in Alubijid

AT LEAST two people were killed while five others were injured after a ten-wheeler truck plowed through three houses along the national highway in Lumbo village, Alubijid town in Misamis Oriental, Thursday morning, June 29.

The accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. after the driver of the truck carrying mineral coal from Zamboanga City lost control, causing it to plow through three houses, a store, and a parked Hyundai Starex van.

Two people were killed while five others were injured including the driver and helper of the truck, according to Police Officer 3 Mark Valles of the Alubijid Municipal Police Station.

Police identified the fatalities as Edgar Elarmo, 29, and a resident of Tipolonan Poblacion, Alubijid; and Arthuro Librada, 45, of Initao town. The two were both workers of nearby Agreda Funeral Services and both were washing the Starex van of the funeral home at the time of the accident.

The truck driver and his companion were immediately brought to the nearby hospital for treatment.

Valles said they are still in the process of questioning witnesses as well as the family of those killed and injured in the incident.

Police identified the driver as Edgar de los Santos, 42, from San Pablo, Pagadian City and his helper as Antonio Ongue, 26.

“I tried to push the brakes but it got stuck. I did not want to kill those people,” De los Santos said.

Susan Simborio, one of the residents whose house was destroyed in the accident, said her mother and niece were inside their house when the truck struck.

“Miraculously, my mother and niece survived the incident, my mother Charita Galarita Nob, 67, was thrown off towards the back portion while a six-month-old infant who was on the hammock was thrown out of the house and survived. They were both rescued from the debris by the people who immediately rushed into the area of incident,” Simborio said.

Galarita was brought to the hospital for her injury with another injured resident identified as Aldy Dionson, 15.

Arnold Lagbas, fire marshal of the town of Alubijid, pointed out that several fire stations and rescue groups responded to the scene.

“My team immediately rushed into the scene while other teams from the towns of Laguindingan, El Salvador and the search and rescue unit of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office from Cagayan de Oro City responded to our call,” said Lagbas.
