Western Visayas secondary girls spikers score opening day wins

WESTERN Visayas Regional Athletic Association secondary girls volleyball team scored twin wins at the opening of the 61st Palarong Pambansa on Monday, April 16, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

The Bacolod Tay Tung High School-led Blue Barons pulled off a win over Soccsksargen (Region 12) after a slow start: 22-25, 25-15, and 25-16.

After an error-filled opening set, WVRAA turned to Erika Deloria in the second frame as they raced to an early double-digit edge before thwarting Region 12's late run.

In the deciding set, Deloria stood up anew along with Joan Monares and Alyssa Bertolano as WVRAA surged to a 21-10 start and never looked back.

In the afternoon session, the Blue Barons defeated Cagayan Valley Region (Region 2) in two straight sets, 25-12 and 25-15.

In elementary football, Negros Occidental anchored team booked 2 early victories in the Palaro with a 4-nil triumph over Caraga and shutting out Cagayan Valley Region (7-0).

In the elementary basketball, the Blue Barons defeated Davao Region, 61-56, behind John Ordas’ 22 points and Dylan Despi’s 16 points.

Silay City-led secondary girls cagebelles also demolished Northern Mindanao, 75-49, while the secondary boys sepak takraw swept host-Region 1 in three straight regus.

In the elementary triple jump, Guimaras’ Gerevil John Gacita landed a silver medal with 11.35m behind National Capital Region’s Adrian Samudio with 11.46m. Central Luzon’s Allandrei Baniaga settled for bronze with 11.25m.

Calatrava National High School's Grace Tejones also crossed the finish line in 10 minutes 52.99 seconds to claim the bronze medal in the secondary girls’ 3000 meter run as Bicol's Leslie Delima and Northern Mindanao's Camilia Tubiano settled for silver.
