Y-Speak: Timeless echoes

RADIO has always been a significant tool of information and communication ever since its inception. The idea of echoing information in a speed of light has mesmerized countless individuals to hook up with what is considered to be the bedrock of today’s media platforms.

And over the years, radio broadcasting has cemented its foundations on Philippine soil and has become one of the most beloved sources of news and entertainment. But will it survive the modern challenges of today’s technological advancements?

To slowly dissect and understand its current situation, I immediately found myself listening to two iconic journalists whose works are well respected, not just in the Metro but in the entire country as well.

They are Anthony Taberna and Gerry Baja of DZMM, hosts of the daily Dos por Dos radio show. My preference on why I chose them is because of the gravity of their show and how controversial opinion-based shows can be.

When you first listen to their show, the first thing you’d probably notice is the tone that they have. Unlike that of the Tulfos, Gerry and Tonying are discussing significant issues in a lighter manner and in a more humorous approach which I think is very effective. The stories they tell are genuine and it’s as if we’re only listening to two friends talking.

I also felt that radio reflects the nature of the society where it’s stamped because every time I listen to Anthony and Gerry, all I could think is the daily conversations that we have on the streets or in school.

It’s as if they’re saying things that we think and have fun about issues because of how depressing it can be. I believe that this is the beauty of radio broadcasting. Its sincere nature tells us that radio broadcasters are the actual voices of the masses and it is captivating in so many levels.

There are also more relatable advertisements aired on radio than on television because we see no aesthetics, no makeups; just pure conversations. And it’s really interesting and wonderful to see how flexible radio has become. Unlike televisions that can only evolve online, radio has evolved in both by having live radio television broadcasts and by having apps or online streaming as well.

Radio programs are still aired in jeepneys, at sari sari stores, and even at barbershops, that’s why we can never question the influence that this medium has. It is also good that DJs and broadcasters greet locals from different barangays who tune in to them every day as observed in Ka Tunying and Gerry’s show.

After years of listening to my two “idols,” I have been convinced that radio broadcasting and its significant role in the society will continue to live on. It’s the most underrated media platform today but it is evolving and not even time can hinder its continuous growth and success.

Twenty years from now, we will continue seeing more Anthonys and more Gerrys delivering timeless echoes.
