FIVE environmental partners were feted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) during the culmination of the month-long celebration of the Environment Month on June 29.
“Gawad Gabay Kalikasan” trophies were awarded to Burayukan Pagrang-ayan Movement Association; Society’s Awareness on Livelihood and Environmental Needs for Growth, Inc.; Guina-ang Community Development Association, Inc.; and the 24th Infantry Battalion (IB), 7th Infantry Division (ID) of the Philippine Army. Architecture student Luke Labre was also recognized.
Burayukan Pagrang-ayan Movement Association from Balong, Tabuk, Kalinga was recognized for developing an 87-hectare area covered by a Community-based Forest Management (CBFM) Agreement into a forest plantation using indigenous knowledge, systems and practices. Through agro forestry crop production, the association has found a source of income.
Another CBFM partner, Society’s Awareness on Livelihood and Environmental Needs for Growth, Inc. from Cabiten, Mankayan, Benguet was also awarded for developing and protecting a 430-hectare timber and agro forestry plantation. The savings generated by the people’s organization from their comprehensive development projects with the DENR-CAR have been invested to various livelihood activities.
In addition, Guina-ang Community Development Association, Inc. from Guina-ang, Conner, Apayao was recognized for developing an agro forestry and timber plantation with an area of 3,904 hectares which has been considered a CBFM model site.
The 24th IB, 7th ID of the Philippine Army which is under the Leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Dominic Baluga was also recognized for their valuable contribution in environmental law enforcement in the region.
From the youth sector, Luke Labre, a Bachelor of Science in Architecture student from Saint Louis University was recognized for his active participation in the recently held poster-slogan making contest of the Department. His participation was noted as a way of supporting the Department’s advocacy of river protection in the Cordillera Administrative Region.
Apart from its environmental partners, the DENR-CAR also feted the best offices in its jurisdiction whose performances and initiatives were essential in the accomplishment of the Department’s physical and financial targets. (PR)
