Negrense thrower beats 26-year-old Palaro record

WESTERN Visayas thrower Jamela de Asis, who is a mainstay of Himamaylan National High School in Negros Occidental, surpasses the 26-year-old secondary girls’ shot put record of 11.20m which was set by Marites Barrios in 1992.

However, De Asis only registered 11.29m – just enough for a silver medal after National Capital Region's Kasandra Hazel Alcantara came stronger with 11.88m – the new Palarong Pambansa shot put record.

Meanwhile, Mary Jean Maloloy-on of Bicol Region finished bronze with 10.61m.

More Palarong Pambansa records were broken in the weeklong competition.

In secondary girls’ archery, Central Visayas’ Phoebe Nicole Amistoso erased two Palaro records in the 30m and 40m, respectively.

She won the gold medal in the 30m event by surpassing last year’s 334-point record set by Negros Island Region’s Ma. Fermi Bajado with the new score of 339 as Central Luzon’s Ma. Karylle Pangilinan also beat the old record with 336 points for a silver medal.

Meanwhile, Cordillera Autonomous Region’s Charmaine Angela Villamor, who set the Palaro record for the 40m event last year, settled for a bronze medal.

Amistoso set a new record in the 40m event with 336 while Julie An Malinog of Caraga scored 324 for a silver medal–surpassing Villamor’s 2017 record of 318. Northern Mindanao’s Zetha Elea Mae Cataluña tied the old record with 318 for a bronze medal.

Moreover, Western Visayas track and field team collected another gold medal courtesy of Trexie dela Torre, a stalwart of Ramonito Maravilla Sr. National High School in Bacolod City.

Dela Torre registered 5.54m to win the gold medal in the secondary girl’s long jump as Bicol Region’s Jasmin Bombita and Region 4-A Evangelene Caminong settled for bronze after booking 5.46m and 5.31m, respectively. (HGD)
