Bautista: Drive

BY NOW, everyone knows how much I would love to drive. My Facebook post would sometimes have me driving my driver. I really do. I just love to drive on the open road or the highways. But as soon as the car comes to a stop or slows down, I take a break. I will lose my drive.

During long vacations here in Baguio, a holiday, surely traffic along the city streets. My drive is to run outdoors. I have always had that drive to get out and run instead. Lately I would have the drive to run to attend my meetings. Wherever it may be. That's my drive lately.

For any meeting around Metro Manila, I will surely have the drive to drive down south for it. It's not that far anyway, nowadays. A drive just for it and back right after. The drive down takes me to my favorite food joints for some take out. Those not found in Baguio.

Along the expressways, the drive to eat will take me to City Mall for Mang Inasal. Razon's for halo-halo and kare-kare, and, of course, Subway for my veggie fill when heading south. Back north, it usually is Chowking, Army Navy and Burger King since all are 24 hours open. It usually is about that late a time when I return.

I would also have the drive to see my son who is away from us here in Baguio. I will have the drive to cook up something every time for him. Beef and Broccoli, Bistek Tagalog, Inihaw na Liempo or Chicken, lately it's Inihaw na longganisa. I do get the drive to go to the grocery for some canned goods and cleaning stuff for him too.

My daily drive is to walk my Pokemon. Yes that's some drive to do it. I do. It gets me up and about. I will walk to pick up Joy from school and walk back home. Since I don't have to drive, it is mostly Goto Baden where we have that drive to go out and eat together. Without a car we never have to worry about parking, hence our drive to check out eating spots before heading home. A date you may call it. That's a sure drive.

Lately and for the first time I was offered free toll along Kennon Road. Well, it's only P15, still the staff manning the station recognized me driving and said it was on him. I said it's ok, he insisted, he said he was happy to just see me and driving.

I drive to any adventure. Lately it has been to Sagada, Banaue, Lagawe, Nueva Viscaya, Isabela, Tugegarao in Cagayan. Ilocos Sur, Bangui, Laoag, Pagudpud, Apayao, Kalinga and back. Just for scouting. A spoilt drive this week it was to Abra and Vigan because of conflict of schedule, but I tell you I had the drive to do a round trip for it. My meeting here was just too important for me not to let go and go.

For the first time, I rode the Deluxe bus. Did you know that it was my idea to Victory Liner for them to come up with one? Yes! A non-stop trip. At first, they were hesitant, not about the idea but the price. And just like any expressway, if you want it fast then just pay for a premium. From one trip it became two then many. Now even the other bus companies are doing the same.

Sometime a long time ago, I was witness to this practice. I had to drive out a point for a point to point bus. It was from Pines Hotel to Manila Hotel, non-stop. We had a blanket and snack plus drinks. Today it is being practiced all around. The Ayala Group has their own, from Alabang Town Center to Glorietta or Trinoma. Well you get the idea.

Still, I prefer to drive every time. That's my drive. It distresses me just like cooking or playing the piano. It is when I forget about many things and just drive for what I would like to do. Being in control, which cooking and playing the piano and driving does for me.

I drove away with Joy for a weekend away from it all the weekend. We, just at the spur of the moment went on to drive down south. A few clothes and off we went. It was fun. Just the two of us. We stopped for food when we wanted to and shared stories the whole trip. Sang at the songs played over our fave radio station that just plays old songs. It makes me drive to drive. Oh and rewarded ourselves with oysters. Drive.

Mom soon reminded me of our Sunday kainan in her place. It was my drive to get going and back home to our home and kids. Upon arrival in the city we still had the drive for some coffee in Camp John Hay with Siopao from 7-Eleven before heading home, since the kids were still sleeping. By then we lost our drive for anything and slept it off.
