Davao holds Cebu to scoreless draw

IT WASN'T the finish that Global Cebu FC wanted but the home side still finished with an unbeaten stand at the Cebu City Sports Center following a scoreless draw with Davao Aguilas FC last Saturday night.

“This is not the result that we wanted but at least we gained one point, which is a positive. We didn’t lose the game. We had plenty of chances in front of the goal but we didn’t convert them. If we converted one early with (Shu) Sasaki then maybe the entire game would have changed,” said Global Cebu FC coach Marjo Allado.

Global Cebu FC had a couple of good chances to score in the first half with an offense anchored on Sasaki.

Sasaki shot wide in his first attempt in the ninth minute and had a perfect opportunity to score the opener with an attempt inside the box from a corner by Matt Hartmann.

Allado made a couple of changes in the second half, putting in striker Sekou Sylla after the break and Yu Hoshide in the 63rd minute.

“We didn’t break the line. We tried to adjust at halftime in order to score and to break the line of their defense but still we couldn’t. Their solid defending made the difference tonight. It’s a lesson for us, we need to train on how to beat that when we play against them again,” said Allado.

In the last 20 minutes of the match, Global Cebu FC was on full attack mode but Davao Aguilas goalkeeper Marko Trkulja along with his defense kept them at bay.

“I’m happy because I got a clean sheet after last week, after a 5-1 loss at home. Coach said that it was a good effort. We played strong defense and the saves came from the team defense definitely,” said Trkulja, who was named “Man of the Match”.

In the final third, Trkulja deflected a header by Hikaru Minegishi and another header by Sylla to preserve the scoreless draw.

“It was an outstanding team effort defensively. I thought we all worked very hard and even at the end we created maybe a chance where on another night we might have pinched the goal and got three points. But I’m very proud of the effort, it was a great turnaround after last week against a good side at home.
Obviously on the back of Global’s victory against Ceres on their home ground they must have been full of confidence. I’m very proud of the players because you could see the frustration on the Global players’ faces,” said Davao Aguilas coach Gary Phillips.

Global Cebu FC beat Ceres Negros FC, 1-0, and Stallion Laguna FC, 3-0, before a draw with Davao Aguilas FC in its home stand.

Global Cebu FC is flying to Manila to the FC Meralco Manila on July 22 before coming back to Cebu City to play against Ceres Negros FC. (EKA)
