NEGRENSE-BORN Marcus Hinojas gets his shot to fight for the National University (NU) Bulldogs in the 2017 Philippine Taekwondo League Tournament which kicked off July 16 in SM San Lazaro, and the 2017 Smart Nationals Taekwondo Championships on July 22 to 23 at Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.
Hinojas is teaming up with last year’s Most Valuable Player Kurt Barbosa, Sturdy Gilbuena, Asal Luiji Estrada, Gabriel Salaknib Soria, and Keith Docado as the NU Bulldogs junior men’s team defends the crown in both tournaments.
Hinojas, who was recruited by the Bulldogs early this year, has been in rigid training together with the country’s best jins under coach Jeffrey Figueroa. Figueroa expects the many-time national and international champion to bring more firepower to his roster.
When Hinojas was still playing in the age-group, he represented Talisay City and Hanah Taekwondo Negros of Vic Feria, where he won various national and international titles, including the gold and silver medals in 2016 and 2017 Carlos Palanca Jr. Kukkiwon Cup National Taekwondo Championships, respectively. He was also named Smart Nationals Best Player in 2012.
In recognition of his contribution to Talisay City, the local government headed by Mayor Neil Lizares recently handed over Hinojas a financial assistance and incentive.
Lizares thanked Hinojas for the honor he brought to the city, particularly to its taekwondo program.
“He has served as an inspiration to Talisay City taekwondo jins who also aspire to be national and international champions", he said.
In the upcoming UAAP Season, Hinojas will be joined by his former Hanah jins teammates Deb Matthew “Jack” Daclan, the 2013 Smart Nationals Best Player, and Keith Docado, the 2013 MVP Best of the Best National Taekwondo Championship best player awardee. (HGD)
