Make your momma proud: Save Mother Earth

CELEBRATE Earth Day today by applying these simple tips in your everyday routine.

1. Throw thrash properly. Non-biodegradable for plastic, cans, containers and such; biodegradable for paper, wood and all those things that can break naturally. If you don’t see any trash bins near you, keep your trash with you until you find one. This is the most basic step to a clean and healthy environment that even children can do.

2. Reduce, reuse, recycle. Cut back the amount of trash you make. Find a new way to use trash so you don’t have to throw it away, and use trash to recreate new goods that can be sold. Not only are you saving the environment but you could also make extra money.

3. Stop using plastic straws. Almost everyone loves to drink their favorite milk tea, blended iced coffee or even soft drinks. But did you know that straws are not recyclable and are non-biodegradable? And since they are disposable, you toss them away after just one use, which means they will just be in the landfills until they degrade after 200 years. Worse, they will pollute the ocean or waterways and kill marine life. So, instead of using plastic straw, use bamboo or steel straws instead.

4. Stop using plastic cups, plastic bags and everything else made of plastic. Though plastics are ideal for storage, most especially of wet goods, they are non-biodegradable. It is unpleasant to see plastics scattered everywhere. But aside from aesthetics, these may clog waterways, or stay in a pile of trash, which may take 1,000 years or more to break down into smaller particles that continue to pollute the water and soil. If you’re staying long in a coffee shop, ask the barista to use a coffee mug instead of plastic cups. If you want to bring it home, bring your own travel coffee mug. If you’re going shopping, opt for an eco-shopping bag and bring utensils wherever you go to avoid using plastic utensils. Eco food wraps are also available for food storage.

5. Save electricity and water. How? By turning it off when you don’t use it. Simple. Not watching television because you’re busy with your phone? Turn it off. Going out? Make sure to turn off the lights and unplug the appliances to save money, electricity and of course, to save your house from fire. Check all faucets, pipes and toilets for leaks. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving. Take shorter showers. And the list goes on....

6. Volunteer for clean-up drives. There are so many organizations holding clean-up drives for the ocean, for the community, for the mountains. Sign up in an advocacy that is closer to your heart. Not only are you saving Mother Nature, but you will also gain some friends that have the same interest as you. Plus, you get to go on an adventure while cleaning up the environment. But remember, even if you won’t volunteer because you’re busy juggling work and life, following these simple steps are enough for you to become a certified eco-warrior.
