THIRTEEN candidates will duke it out in the first ever Binibining Mabolo next month.

The beautiful candidates are ready to show Cebu what it means to be a true “Mabolonian.”

The pageant attempts to achieve a mark in history being the first grandiose and televised barangay-organized beauty contest. With this, Mabolo hopes to create a rippling effect with the other barangays to inspire their youth to proactively participate in shaping the future of the nation.

“The heart of Binibining Mabolo is a woman who is empowered not just for beauty but also with the passion for nature and to help people be aware of how they can address or be prepared when it comes to disasters, because this is one of the inevitable situations or calamities in the world, not just within Barangay Mabolo,” said Pathrese Lei Mari Abejuela, production manager of Binibining Mabolo 2018. “We want to start with us and through the candidates of Binibining Mabolo. We want to use them as the voice for this cause.”

The winner of the competition will then represent Barangay Mabolo and spearhead activities for educating the people about disaster awareness and how to better protect the environment.

The pageant night will be held on May 11, which is the first day of the novena for the fiesta of Mabolo for its patron saint, St. Joseph. The fiesta celebration in Mabolo is from May 11 to 20.

Thirteen awards are up for grabs during the coronation night: Face of Binibini, Model Face Award, Binibining Confidence, Binibini of the Press, Binibining Personality, Eloquence Award, Best in Production Number, Best in Fun Wear, Best in Summer Wear, Best in Evening Gown, 2nd Runner-Up, 1st Runner-Up and the first Binibining Mabolo Grand Winner.

The candidates for the first Binibining Mabolo are Audrey Clea Gabaya, Maria Mitchiko Villaver, Arianne Mae Manquiquis, Angelie Pacaldo, Julienne Therese Dabon, Maria Fe Loayon, Rhean Emmanuelle Caruana, Karen Barbara Tantay, Kissha Ann Nuñez, Ma. Milkhielyn Enriquez, Nora Veronique Culaba, Kefaiah Al-zair and Marchel Magaspi.

The candidates are not exactly from Barangay Mabolo. The screening for the candidates was opened to all interested participants.

“None of the candidates come from Mabolo but each of them will represent one sitio in our barangay. They will then get to know the sitio that will adopt them and they will need to visit these sitios regularly to participate in several activities,” said Michael Vincent Racaza, project proponent of Binibining Mabolo 2018.

Among the activities the candidates are expected to attend are the basketball summer league and feeding program this month, and tree-planting activity and a clean-up drive next month.

The organizers of the event clarified during the press conference that none of the money used for the pageant will be coming from the barangay as all of these were sourced from sponsorships and private companies.

Among the judges for the pageant night will be former councilor and head of the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Ma. Nida Cabrera, Roxy Salon owner Roxanne G. Racaza, Hari ng Lapu-Lapu 2014 Frenche Bonn Petallo and Miss Teen Mabolo 2012 Claire Nolen Pestaño.

Some of the other judges have yet to be named but one will represent Mabolo Royal Hotel while another will be from Experience More. The organizers hinted that another judge is a famous Bisaya artist.

“This was just a dream and now we’re starting off with the biggest and the grandest pageant of Mabolo,” said Abejuela. “We are trying to build this dream and making it a reality. We don’t want this to be just a pageant that would only showcase beauty. This is a pageant that will make a voice for our cause, which is education for disaster awareness. We will use the beauty of our candidates for this cause to be heard. This was and will continue to be an open pageant and all of the Cebuanos are very open to join and screen in the coming years. The only thing we are looking for is for that candidate to have a heart of a Mabolonian.”

Coronation night will be held on May 11, 8 p.m. at the Don Benedicto Cultural Center.

The top five winners will win a Sky Water Park Experience for three and a P3,000 consolation prize will be given to all non-winners. The second runner-up will receive P10,000, while the first runner-up will receive P15,000. Binibining Mabolo 2018 will receive P20,000 plus a trip to Palawan for two--and a crown of course.
