Oro poll body prepares peace covenant signing

THE local poll body is gathering aspiring village and youth officials for a covenant signing on April 26 to ensure peaceful and orderly barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

The covenant signing will be held at the Nazareth gym in Cagayan de Oro City as the city Commission on Elections (Comelec) scheduled a briefing and forum to orient candidates of the “do’s and don’t’s” during the campaign period.

The campaign period is set on May 4-12.

City Comelec officer Lawyer Ramil Acol said they already requested the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) and the police to join the candidates briefing.

He said candidates were already notified of the activity upon their filing of certificate of candidacy last week.

“Kung dili sila katunga, wala tay mahimo kay ang tuyo man ani nga ma-brief sila sa unsay buhaton sa campaign period ug covenant signing dayon nga dili sila mag-away-away aron peaceful ang election (We can’t do anything if a candidate could not make it but the purpose of this activity is to orient candidates and covenant signing),” Acol said.

Part of the discussion is to inform candidates to place their campaign materials in designated areas in the barangay like public plaza.

Acol said they will remove campaign paraphernalia that are hanged on trees or electric posts in the highways.

Acol said some 2,951 candidates for barangay and SK positions have filed their certificate of candidacy last week.

“Ang 37 ani is atong Saturday nga extension kay naa man request ang National Youth Commission (NYC),” Acol said.

Acol confirmed that there were barangays where SK positions were not totally filled.

“Naay mga barangay nga kulang ang SK kagawad. Naay uban nga zero gyud pero naa sad uban nga nanobra,” Acol added.

But Acol said the election will still push through and the Department of Interior and Local Government will have to take a move on how to go about the villages without complete SK positions.

Acol repeatedly reminds would-be village and youth leaders to follow election rules, avoid overspending and vote buying.
