Talandang, Kabacan, Vicente Hizon, Tambobong in semis

TALANDANG Elementary School (ES) team captain Ruselle Mae Ferolino Pombo, who lifted her team to a semifinals berth in the Kadayawan Girls Volleyball Tournament 2017 on Saturday at the University of Mindanao (UM) Gym in Matin, Davao City, was elated by the experience she and her teammates have gained so far in the three-day meet that wraps up Sunday.

Talandang ES of Tugbok, 27 kilometers away from the venue, joined unbeaten favorite Kabacan Elementary School, Tambobong Elementary School and Vicente Hizon Sr. Elementary School (VHSES) in the semifinals round. Talandang takes on Tambobong of Baguio District at 9 a.m. while the 8 a.m. curtain raiser pits Kabacan against VHSES.

Pombo, an 11-year-old fifth grader, said, "Maningkamot mi, kayanon nga mudaog mi ani. Karon rami makadula ani ka nindot nga gym, dili slide ang flooring. Sa amoa kay yuta pirmi among ginadulaan, mapandol mi usahay (We will do our best to win this tournament. This is the first time we played in a nice gym such as this, the floor is not slippery. In our place, we play on uneven ground that sometimes makes us trip over)."

She added, "Nag-enjoy mi diri (We really enjoyed it here)."

Coach Maureen Pombo said the last time they played in non-Department of Education (DepEd) tournament was in 2013. Deped events include Line Meet, District and Unit Meet that serve as qualifying for the Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) Meet en-route to the regional qualifying and to the Palarong Pambansa.

"Karon pami kadula sa Kadayawan kay 2013 pa tong last. Nagpasalamat mi sa higayon na gihatag sa amoa (This is the first time we played during Kadayawan again since the last time was in 2013. We are thankful for the opportunity that was given to us)," the coach said.

Talandang ES and VHSES recorded identical three wins one loss each in pool B. Tambobong ES had three wins and one defeat. The latter succumbed to KES, 18-25, 20-25 in their pool A encounter. KES was unbeaten in four games against Sirawan Elementary School (25-14, 25-13), VF Corcuera Elementary School (25-23, 25-9) and Matina Central Elementary School (25-8), 25-7).

The championship game is slated at 1 p.m. today. Trophies, cash prizes and certificates await the winners of the 1o-team volleyfest organized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) in coordination with the city government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.

The meet, officiated by Balibolista de Dabaw and also supported by UM and DepEd Davao City Division, aims to give public elementary schools opportunity to compete.

A free volleyball clinic was also held yesterday and was handled by tournament director Abet Bernan with UM sports director Joaquin "Boy" Sarabia and the UM women's volleyball team.
