Ex-champ faces patsy in comeback

FORMER world champion Marvin Sonsona returns to the ring after almost a three-year layoff.

Sonsona, a former World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight champion, faces battle-scarred Indonesian veteran Arief Blader in the undercard of the Joven Sports and MP Promotions promoted show “Survival Instinct - Matira ang Matibay” on May 15 at the SM Skydome in Quezon City.

Sonsona last saw action in 2015 with a majority decision victory of Jonathan Arrellano at the StubHub Center in Carson City, California.

Sonsona rose to stardom after winning the WBO super flyweight crown with a unanimous decision over Jose Lopez in Canada in 2009.

Sonsona was a very talented young prospect but he had troubles outside the ring that derailed his very promising boxing career.

At 27 years old, Sonsona still has time to revive his career, and a fight with an experienced fighter like Blader should be a good gauge on where he’s at right now.

Blader has lost his last seven fights. He, however, fought some good boxers like Terdsak Jandaeng, Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo and Hiroshige Osawa.

Sonsona is 20-1-1 with 15 knockouts, while the 32-year-old Blader is 23-27-2 with eight knockouts.

The boxing show features former Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga (8-0, 1 KO) in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) title eliminator against Gabriel Mendoza (29-5-2, 23 KOs) in the main event.

Also featured in the show are former ALA Boys Genesis Servania and AJ “Bazooka” Banal.

Servania (30-1, 13 KOs), who was recently signed by Top Rank, trades leathers with experienced Indonesian Jason Butar-Butar (27-23-1, 18 KOs), while Banal (35-2-1, 23 KOs) locks horns with Indonesian Master Suro (12-13-1, 2 KOs). (RSC)
