Alyssa Sumulong 'not a UP Cebu student'

THE University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu said it has no student named Alyssa Sumulong, who was reportedly arrested in Negros Occidental after an encounter between government troops and communist rebels.

Sumulong, according to a Facebook post by the Philippine Army's 303rd Infantry Brigade (Brown Eagle), took up Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from UP Cebu but stopped to join the "Communist NPA Terrorists (CNT) group."

She was arrested after an encounter with government troops in Barangay Guadalupe, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, last April 16, stated the post.

It added that the troops recovered subversive documents, including a diary (journal) of Sumulong, "with her handwriting and private notes which exposes her trauma/bad experiences during her stay with the Communist NPA Terrorist group."

UP Cebu spokesperson Gregg Lloren confirmed that they received such report, but the university records "show that we do not have a student, either past or present, by such name."

"Nonetheless, it is part of our liberal education not to intrude in our students’ religious beliefs, political affiliation, cultural orientation, and right to think freely. After graduation or outside of UP Cebu Campus, we have no control on decisions our students/alumni make," Lloren added.

According to Brown Eagle's Facebook post, Sumulong, 26, joined the communist group in 2011 when she underwent "CNT training somewhere in the hinterland area of Himamaylan, Negros Occidental."

"She was integrated and became a full-time member sometime in 2012 and deployed in the hinterland barangays of San Carlos, Negros Occidental; and Canlaon and Vallehermoso both of Negros Oriental," added the post.

In her diary, Sumulong reportedly revealed that she was molested and almost raped "by a certain alyas Lindo who made sexual assaults on her many times."

The case of Sumulong, stated the Facebook post, quoting Brigadier General Eliezer Losañes, commander of 303rd Brigade, "is a clear evidence that Communist NPA Terrorist sexually harassed Sumulong and will continue to harass and sexually abuse their female recruits until now and that is a strong evidence of Human Rights violation and Violations Against Women and Children."

"She is one of the many victims of harassment and deceitful recruitment, and unending lies," it added.
