Spending a healthy summertime

THE summer heat is on. Summer means beautiful sunny weather, beach days and long vacation. But somehow every now and then, summer rain falls to beat the heat.

It is in summertime when most people go places and look for fun ways to cool down as the sun goes a-sizzling. But be safe wherever you wish to be or whatever plans you have.

Let’s check out the following water and travel safety tips.

Water: Most basic tip is learn to swim. Obey all rules and posted signs. Swim in supervised areas only. Swim with a buddy; never swim alone. Don’t mix alcohol with water. Meaning, don’t swim drunk.

Alcohol impairs judgment, balance and coordination, affects swimming skills and reduces the body’s ability to stay warm. Pay attention to local weather conditions and forecasts. Stop swimming at the first indication of bad weather because water conducts electricity.

Travel: Be sure to have a thorough safety inspection of your vehicle by a certified mechanic before you hit the road. When on the road, make sure you have enough time in your travel schedule to allow for breaks every few hours. Don’t use mobile phones while driving.

Buckle up seat belts. Put your child on the back seat. It is the safest side in case of a head-on crash. Keep supplies with you like water body fluid, first-aid kit, snacks and medicines. Don’t drink and drive.

Rest well before the scheduled trip. Say a prayer before leaving.

Drink more fluids regardless of your activity level. Play sport; it doesn’t have to be organized, just fun. Learn a new hobby, collecting, building models, sewing by hand. Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Visit therapy clinics for a soothing body, foot and facial massage. Aside from the therapeutic effect on your body, massage provides relaxation, balance in the body’s various centers, healthy circulation and an overall manipulation of the physical form and structure of the body. Ask your therapist on the right type of massage you need.

Don’t drink liquids that contain caffeine or large amounts of sugar.

They actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Don’t drink very cold drinks because they can cause stomach cramps.

Most of us worked hard all year round. Now is the time to recreate, rejuvenate and relax. Would it be just around our nearby beautiful places in Cagayan de Oro, a trip to historic Corregidor, an adventure in Palawan’s underground river, a trek up Mt. Apo or a quiet, unhurried moments in the comfort of our home; suit yourself.

Wishing an enjoyable summertime to all of us!
