MAGALANG - In order to increase the productivity of local farmers here, the Department of Agriculture and the local government unit (LGU) of Magalang distributed on Thursday hand tractors and rice drum seeders worth more than P3.1 Million.
Mayor Malu Paras-Lacson said that 20 units of hand tractors amounting to P2,600,000 and 68 units of rice drum seeders worth P510,000 were turned over to all farmer cooperatives and associations in this town.
Lacson said that the budget came from the 2016 Bottoms Up Budgeting of the Department of Agriculture-RFU III with a counterpart from the LGU.
She said that the reason for the distribution of farm machinery is to increase the productivity of local farmers here.
"Gusto natin mag-increase ang productivity nila in terms of harvest in lesser time. Kung tao ang gagawa ay matatagalan pero kung may hand tractor sila ay mas mapapabilis ang pagtatrabaho sa lupang kanilang sinasaka," Lacson said.
Lacson added that one of the priorities of the LGU is to assist the farming sector since Magalang is an agricultural town.
"We are an agricultural town so lahat ng assistance na nanggagaling sa national government para sa mga magsasaka ay aming binababa sa kanila. Ito ay mga idea ng local government na funded ng BUB," She said.
Meanwhile, Magalanga Agri-Fisheries Council Chairman Roger Santos thanked Lacson for her continued concern and support to local farmers here.
"Pinasasalamatan namin ang aming mabuting mayora na nagbibigay ng mga farm machineries na hand tractors at drum seeders. Malaking tulong po ito sa mga magsasaka," Santos said.
Santos added that the farm machinery will be a great help in assisting farmers to achieve higher productivity of their crops.
He also said that one of the main problems of farmers is irrigation which is a yearly dilemma during the summer season, but added that he and the LGU are constantly in coordination with the proper government agencies to address this problem. (Chris Navarro)
