CAGAYAN de Oro City National High School (NHS) and Indahag NHS ruled the 2017 South district meet secondary basketball tournament at the Nazareth gym, over the weekend.
The City High Tigers of coach Bismark Labadan secured their first ever district title after besting two of the city’s notable teams in secondary boys division.
The Tigers thrashed Saint Mary’s School, 64-43 in the first round, then sealed the crown after outlasting defending champion Corpus Christi School, 49-38 in the three-team final.
Labadan acknowledged Jomarie dela Piedra and Jericho Hermoso for their aggressive play that mattered the most in the Tigers’ title finish.
Completing the cast for the Tigers are Jay Reed, Mark Lein, Joshua Gayla, Jerick Ranido, Mark Ranido, Mark Louie Palarca, John Bongcawil, CJ dela Victoria, Paul Vincent Guidaben and bothers Angelo and Carlo Mercado.
The win had somewhat erased the Tigers’ underdog billing as they’re now considered a title threat in this year’s City Meet against the likes of Assumption Montessori School and Southern de Oro Philippines College.
Before the South District Meet, the Tigers won two inter-public school titles and one in this year’s Loyola Cup 17-under level.
Indahag NHS lady Skyhawks, meanwhile picked their six-straight district title after beating Corpus Christi School lady knights.
Also the reigning Loyola Cup champion, the lady Skyhawks proved too strong for the newly-organized lady knights of coach Catrina June Pong-Biongcog.
Indahag refused to give Corpus Christi a game in their best-of-three final series.
In the elementary division, SMS baby Fiat of coach Rene Ilogon bagged the gold via a 42-26 rout of the CCS baby knights.
