Clenuar: The killer under your roof

IT SPRINTS, it pounces, and it "ruins" your life every day. It pushes off objects on shelves and looks at you as if to dare you to stop it from doing so. It asks for love and affection but hesitates to reciprocate. It leaves dead animals on your porch or worse, decapitated bird heads on your bed and rolls over for a belly rub.

I was sleeping with my hair laid down when my cat, Mooji, jumped on my head and started kneading. At first it was a soft press because he was using his paws. When I settled for comfort and hoped for more, he hastily commenced his new found hobby - chewing my hair. If I interrupt his fun, he would make his way to the highest cabinet in the room and begins this odd staring contest, or happily knock things over.

Sometimes when I walk around the house, he sees this as a perfect opportunity for an ambush. He waits and creeps under the bed, bidding his time and waiting for the perfect opportunity to attack my feet.

There are days when your body screams for sleep and all you hear are three screaming cats forcing you to replenish their feeding bowl. And when just when you are about to doze off, your fat cat decides to sit on your face.

I have been thinking what their thoughts might be aside from Mooji perhaps plotting to kill me. Does he think about the boring politics in the Philippines? Does he care about the Extra Judicial Killings and the controversial killings of the three students? Would he roll his eyes just like his human when she sees Bato shedding copious or crocodile tears every time the Philippine National Police is pilloried? Does he favor the outcry of the masses – not the 16 million of course –for ‘real’ change, change that is geared towards the betterment of the country and not the obvious downfall of it?

Seeing my cat licking himself, I think he has only two thoughts he that likes to ponder on in this world: food and sex. He is smart and wise yet he hesitates to think aside from the two aforementioned activities.

For this life, the killer is a cat with shiny, pointy and deadly claws. I am more than insane for writing about cats in a nation of sinners and mad men but Pantaleon Alvarez and his hooligans are more insane for approving a P1,000 budget for the Commission on Human Rights. It may be one way of getting the message across that any person or a government agency that hinders ‘success’ of this administration is threatened with oblivion. As to the definition of success, it is subjective and only understood by the majority who forgot to think critically on the day they were asked to vote.

Cats, politicians, and killers. But I think the real killers are the Filipinos who are obstinate, refusing to listen and learn from their mistakes.

Those who forgot to think critically on the day there were asked to vote are, just like cats, killers too.
