Sungduan: Preserving Ilocano culture

THE Timpuyog Dagiti Mannurat iti Iloko iti Filipinas (TMIF) takes a bigger stride in preserving the culture and traditions of Ilocanos worthy of emulation particularly the use of the Iloco dialect. This time they are focusing on the youth and the millennials.

In support of the celebration of the National Literature month, the group conducted its annual literary conference lately at the North Luzon Philippines State College, Candon City, Ilocos Sur wherein the participants learned the mechanics of short story writing, how to prepare and write news, and write poems.

This conference dubbed “Panangtaginayon kadagiti pagulidanan a kultura ken kannawidan ni Ilokano.” (Preservation of the culture and traditions of the Ilocanos worthy of emulation), was attended by more than 120 students from the different State Colleges and Universities, and non-government organizations in Cordillera including Regions I and II.

Literary patrons, writers and enthusiasts from Canada, USA, Australia and other countries also participated in the three-day activity wherein the participants were also challenged to join in the on the spot poem writing contest and live news reporting.

Another highlight of the event was the launching of the books of three known Iloco writers lead by TMI president Franklin Macugay and Board of Directors Crispin Dannug and Jamie Raras.

These include the book “Diamante ken Balitok” an anthology of the words, stories, and poems of former Baguio Professor Dr. Clarito de Francia who is now based in Santa Maria, California; Educator and media man Rolando Gamoso’s “Bay-annak nga Agarapaap” which is a collection of poems; and TMI’s Board of Director Severino Pablo’s “Alburuto.”

The other officers of TMI include vice president Ruperto Manuel, secretary Rodelito Ramos, treasurer Aurelio Battad, business manager Henry Tangalin, press relations officer Rogie Baysa, auditor Gerry Rillorta, and board of directors Luz Sampaga and Marilyn Luzano.

TMI’s effort in engaging the youth for the promotion of the Ilocano culture and involving them in an interactive learning activity is laudable. May this project continue for the next generation.
