Zonta Cebu 2 on the ball!

BUSY as the proverbial bee are the members of the Zonta Club of Cebu 2 as they go about their various advocacies dealing with women’s issues i.e. violence against women, girls and children.

Recently, Zonta project chairperson Mandaue for women Dr. Elsa Basubas, arranged for a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing between the club and the City of Mandaue. Under this MOA, Zontians can conduct regular seminars creating awareness and safety for the Mandauehanons.

This seminar/workshop is entitled “Abay sa Kahayag” which will commence the “18 Days of Activism” next month.

The St. Mary Euphrasia Center for Children in Talisay City is another laudable project of the club. The center houses young ladies and children who are at risk in their dysfunctional homes, and are sheltered by nuns until such time it is “safe” for them to return home.

Here, the Zontians engage in fun and friendly activities with them through skills training, games, and even hobbies such as origami. By interacting this way, gradually, the children will improve their emotional and educational levels.

Last week, there was an informative powerpoint presentation by Niel Steve Kintanar, MA, a PRC-registered psychologist and a graduate MA in Psychology, major in Counseling at Ateneo de Manila University batch 2010.

He has also published his research on comparing conflict resolutions strategies of individuals who are in opposite or same sex relationships in the Philippine Journal of Psychology.

With these impressive credentials, Kintanar’s focus was on “Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity Expression” (Sogie). The subject touched on the controversial LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender).

The event was the Monthly General Membership meeting of the Zonta Club of Cebu 2 at Casino Español de Cebu. The very immersing lecture was indeed an “eye opener” that left the members better-equipped to deal with LGBTs!
