SEVERAL contraband items were seized during the simultaneous greyhound operations conducted in eight jails in Negros Occidental Wednesda, October 11.
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) conducted the operations around 7 a.m. at Metro Bacolod District Jail (MBDJ)-Male and Female Dormitories in Barangay Handumanan and Metro Bacolod District Jail-Special Intensive Care Area (MBDJ-Sica) in Barangay Taculing, both in Bacolod City; Negros Occidental District Jail (NODJ) in Bago City; Cadiz City Jail; San Carlos City District Jail; Victorias City District Jail; and Talisay City Jail.
This is in line with the BJMP’s nationwide campaign “Oplan Linis Piitan” that ensures every jail facility is clear from contraband items, particularly illegal drugs.
In Bacolod City, unauthorized items like ballpens, spoon, wood with nails, lighters, an empty cigarette pack, an improvised knife, and pairs of scissors were confiscated.
Senior Inspector Larry Fuentes, jail warden of MBDJ-Sica, said the non-recovery of illegal drugs inside the jail is a positive development resulting from the strict implementation of safety measures.
The MBDJ-Sica has 716 inmates while the male and female dormitories of MBDJ in Barangay Handumanan have 816 and 196 inmates, respectively.
Senior Inspector Norberto Miciano, warden of male dormitory of MBDJ, said the latest operation shows they have controlled the entry of other contrabands inside the jail.
Four sacks of contraband items like improvised knives, mobile phones, and cigarettes were recovered inside the NODJ.
In a press statement, Chief Inspector Castle Masip, warden of NODJ, said there is a need to conduct the greyhound operation to maintain peace and order inside the jail.
Masip said the elimination of all kinds of contrabands will give way to a conducive environment for the reformation and development of the inmates.
“We are not the proper authority to declare that Negros Occidental District Jail is a 100 percent drug-free jail, but we can assure everyone that since day one, this management has worked tirelessly to fight illegal drugs inside this jail and we will not stop until the very tiny speck of illicit drugs will be erased and terminated in this facility,” Masip said.
