RULES and regulations are given to have an orderly sort of everything. It should not be neglected; it should not be taken for granted and should not be ignored to avoid inconvenience.

But what happens if someone ignores the rules and regulations that are set to be complied?

Along the boulevard of Davao, you can notice the signage that says, “Driving is a privilege, not a right”, it is placed in every road to remind people that driving is not a constitutional right but rather it is just an authorization.

For a person to be able to drive anywhere and anytime he should have a driver’s license, it is a proof that he is capable and have enough knowledge to be in the road. That he is conscious of the dos and don’ts of driving, and that he is aware of the consequences that he may face if he’ll ever be in trouble.

How come some people still has the guts to ignore the reminders that the government has imposed not just for their advantage but for the betterment of everyone.

I commute every day; I ride public utility vehicles to be able to go to school, to go the mall, or to go to the church. I have experienced witnessing a traffic accident caused by reckless drivers, caused by people who took driving for granted.

How can someone be so careless? Without thinking first of the possible consequences of their wrong doings, of the innocent individuals who might get involved, and of course, their life that they are putting at risk.

No sane person would be glad to be hit by a car by just walking in the sidewalks. No one wants to be hurt; no one will be pleased to be involved in vehicular accidents just because of reckless driving.

There are many ways to be safe while driving, such as wearing seatbelts, following traffic lights and traffic signage, not going beyond the speed limit, not driving while texting and most of all to not drive when drunk. These are just easy ways to avoid being hurt, to avoid putting your life in danger. By these you can also prevent from hurting someone.

There is no harm in following the rules. Being law-abiding doesn’t make us less of a person, so if we want to avoid being regretful in the very end, then we must be obedient from the very start. (Yvonne C. Masloc FSUU Intern)
