United Nations Day Celebration

IT WAS around 10 in the morning as I was on my way to downtown to cover the events assigned to me last Thursday morning, when cheerful voices ringing out from Ma-a Central Elementary School drew me in. They were celebrating the United Nations Day.

Around a hundred pupils were suited up according to the country they were representing. You see in the children not just the most creative and colorful national costumes, you also witness the effort of the parents in making these costumes for their little angels.

From the United States of America, Japan, South Korea, France, to the Philippines and many more countries, these were represented in the children's costumes.

The parents and guardians' eyes were all watching their wards, wiping the sweat from their faces and giving them food and drinks.

During a speech by a Department of Education official, the students were also given a pep talk about how important to be united to achieve much larger goals in life translated in to the context that the children will understand.

After a short screening made by the faculty, standouts from the SPED, Kindergarten and Elementary were presented to the judges and were made to parade on stage.

I left with a happy feeling and a realization that I never had the chance to join such colorful celebration during my elementary years.

The children and parents left the venue with big smiles, even if many did not make it to the top.
