AS Davao City goes forward to become the chocolate capital of the Philippines, the Best of Davao Team joined SM City’s Davao Chocolate Festival which featured all the yummy treats produced by local cacao growers and chocolatiers.
The 4th Davao Chocolate Festival, which opened last October 12 to 15, is a project of SM City Davao and the Cacao Industry Development Association of Mindanao, Inc., the Davao Chocolate Festival brings together the region's best cacao growers and processors.
And onto our mission to discover the best tasting chocolate cake around the city, we gathered the participating bakeries that offer chocolate cake. We were lucky enough to have Cebu’s very own Raquel Choa grace the event and judge the cakes herself.
Choa is a pioneer in modernizing the traditional “tablea” from local cacao beans, and has proudly served it to international guests. She is dubbed as Cebu’s chocolate queen and is the woman behind Ralfe Gourmet, The Chocolate Chamber (TCC), and Batirol.
Along with her were Cidami Executive Director Val Turtur and SM City Davao Mall Manager Ms. Maria Lynette Lopez who were also addicted to chocolates and just as meticulous as the former.
We asked them to share their expertise on judging three cakes without telling where the cakes are from and of course, they were as excited as we were and it showed on the video (watch our video format of SunStar Davao’s Best chocolate cake in Davao award on our Facebook Page: SunStar Davao).
During the judging, cake number one stood out to be the best. Judges Raquel Choa and Lynette Lopez were on the same note as they praised how perfectly soft the texture of the cake was and how good the bits of nuts on top of its sweet chocolate layer complemented with the sugary taste.
Miss Choa, who wants her judgment accurate, also shared that the smell of the cake would tell so much about how it’s made as well as how good the kind of tablea was used in it. And she said that cake number one smelled fine, “since Davao is projecting to be the chocolate capital of the country, I think this cake would best represent that goal”, she added.
Miss Lopez, on the other hand, said that chocolate cake number one trickles her taste buds and reminded her of the chocolate goods her mom used to bake back then. “It would be the cake that me and my siblings would rush to get the first bite and eat it all,” she said.
Being the only thorn among the roses, Sir Val Turtur also seemed to have a different taste on judging chocolate cakes as he had a different favorite. He said that from the looks, he would definitely be attracted to chocolate cake number three, because it is his idea of a good chocolate cake, “it is moist and has lots of chocolate layers, it’s huge and fits right for my appetite”. However, upon tasting, he said his bet would be on chocolate cake number two. “It’s not that sweet yet it gives me all the flavors I like to taste from a chocolate cake,” he explained.
And true enough, there’s really a different favorite for every palette but the one that bested the other two was from Yolks Flower Cafe + Cupcakery. Yes, that one owned by renowned tv personality and journalist who’s also a chef, Michelle Robin.
Yolks is the first ever "flower cafe" in Mindanao which just opened on August last 2016 to serve its customers delectable meals combined with cozy place and lovely imported flowers. It is located at Doors A& B, Bella Vie Building, Circumferential Road in Davao City.
You would wish to visit the shop as they don’t only bake good chocolate cakes, they also serve the best matcha and red velvet cakes (yes, we splurged on their baked goods and we like it *a lot*). See you there!
