Steel plant, LGU declog creek to prevent flooding

SAN SIMON - Real Steel Corporation (RSC) and the Municipal Government are working hand in hand to remove water lily along the Panquiary Creek which is the main cause of massive flooding in Barangay Sta. Monica in this town.

Cyril Angelica Hilario, Pollution Control Officer of Real Steel Corporation told SunStar Pampanga the other day that the five day clean-up started on October 23 and will last until Friday, October 27.

Hilario said that the clean up drive is just one of the many RSC corporate social responsibility projects in Sta. Monica.

She said that RSC provided the tools, food and allowances of 13 workers undertaking the removal of one kilometer-long waterlily stretch at the Panquiary creek connecting Manila Bay.

She said that this is the reason the management of RSC decided to pursue this project and give something back to the community.

Meanwhile, Mel Tayag, San Simon Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer said that this is a joint project of RSC and the LGU headed by Mayor Leonora C. Wong.

Tayag said that the LGU will be donating a bamboo raft to be used in monitoring the said creek.

He said that the collective efforts of RSC and LGU including the barangay will assure the continuity of the project which is seen to lessen the flooding in the barangay.

Tayag added that the provincial government has a livelihood training program using waterlils, which can benefit residents here seeking additional income.
