Pangan: DTI's take on barangay enterprises & MSMEs

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has an active and updated roster of barangay enterprises. In Central Luzon, it reported the most number of Barangay Micro Business Enterprises or BMBEs which passed through the 64 Negosyo Centers in the region, for a total of 2,240 BMBEs.

Next in the list is Calabarzon which registered 2,126 BMBEs followed by the National Capital Region with 1,861 and Western Visayas which had 1,153 BMBEs registered in 2017.

Zambales leads the Central Luzon roster with 691 registered BMBEs; followed by Nueva Ecija with 384; Pampanga with 259; Bulacan-258; Bataan-257 and Aurora with 211 and Tarlac with 180 registered BMBEs.

It should be noted that Aurora bested Tarlac, a known trading and business center, as to the number of registered BMBEs. The field office of Aurora must have exerted best efforts to disseminate info on the role of BMBEs in the upgrading of the local economy thereat. What Tarlac needs is more exposure to the impact and role of BMBEs in the area.

Speaking of Tarlac, there were avid participants in the Kapatid Mentor Micro Enterprise or KMME who participated in the launching of KMME at Dampa sa Tarlac function hall on April 12, 2018.

The Department of Trade and Industry continues to push for the improvement and growth of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises or MSMEs in various area of the country.

One activity it espouses is the Kapatid Mentor Micro Enterprises (KMME) program which guides small enterprises during their infancy and until they become sustainable and self-motivated.

DTI Regional Director Judith P. Angeles leads Central Luzon mentorship program where she outlined the different assistance initiatives and services of her agency, including of course the KMME program.

She disclosed that the government aims to scale up the MSMEs sector by providing them a holistic set of services that "will enable them to grow and participate not only in the local, but also in the global market".

The owners of MSMEs should take full advantage of the government's drive to make them viable, strong and sustainable and be able to compete actively in world activities.

Additionally, the DTI helped the Central Luzon MSMEs through its One Town, One Product Next Generation and Brand Equity Development where it provided small businesses the assistance to develop the projects and product design, packaging and labelling. This is one service the MSMEs cannot afford to miss.
