Oro police record zero election-related violence, incident

A POLICE official in Cagayan de Oro City on Monday, May 14, said the village and youth polls were generally peaceful and successful in terms of security and peace and order.

Superintendent Mardy Hortillosa II, spokesperson of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo), said no untoward incident or election-related violence was recorded in the city within the voting time from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"Peaceful ang atong election walay mga kagubot ug mga dagkong insidente including sa mga (The election is peaceful, no riots and major incidents including in the) hinterland barangays," Hortillosa said.

Hortillosa said the city police only noted minor altercations and heated arguments among the supporters of the Nacaya's and Rodriguez's, the contending families in barangay Nazareth.

He said the tension grew after supporters of the two parties have faced in a brief confrontation in South City Central School.

The police officers were able to manage and control the situation.

Hortillosa said the police visibility and participation of the voters and candidates alike, who generally followed the election rules and regulations, made the local poll a success.

Authorities have arrested eight people who violated the liquor ban.

Arrested were Rey Rodriguez, 33; Lester Rasonable, 36; both residents of barangay Cugman, this city, and Vincent Montajes, 34, resident of barangay Lapasan; the three were caught having a drinking spree along the coastal road in Barangay Lapasan, at 6:45 p.m., on Sunday.

Police station 6 personnel earlier arrested five men who also caught drinking alcoholic beverage at the sidewalk of the national highway in barangay Tablon, this city.

Hortillosa said all violators were detained and will face charges in relation to Commission on Elections' liquor ban.
