PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) chief Oscar Albayalde confirmed on Wednesday, May 16, that the two policewomen captured by suspected members of the Abu Sayaff Group have been released in Patikul, Sulu.
Police Officer 3 Benierose Alvarez and Police Officer 1 Dinah Gumahad are now under the custody of Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan. Details of the release are not available yet, Albayalde said.
He said the two police officers will be turned over to the Sulu police.
"Siguro 'yung negotiation at tulong na rin ng governor natin doon at hindi natin alam kung ano talaga paved the way for the release nung dalawang hostage na yun but of course malaki tulong ng negotiations at tulong ng local government unit doon sa Jolo, Sulu," he said.
(We don't know what paved the way for their release. Of course, the local government's assistance and conduct of negotiations were a big help.)
Alvarez and Gumahad along with their two companions identified as Blas Jackosalim Ahamad and Faizal Ahidji Hambali were abducted by suspected Abu Sayyaf members led by sub-leader Almujer Yadah on April 29 while on board a tricycle in Barangay Liang, Patikul, Sulu.
However, Ahamad was rescued by the Marine Landing Team Batallion around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8 in Sitio Budjang, Barangay Libog Kabao, Panglima Estino, Sulu while Hambali was released by the group in Sitio Daang Puti, Barangay Bangkal, in Patikul, Sulu on May 5. (SunStar Philippines)
