Victorias boxer eyes regional title in Australia

VICTORIAS City-based Richard Claveras (18-3-2 with 15 KOs) is set to challenge undefeated World Boxing Association Oceania Super flyweight champion Andrew “The Monster” Moloney (16-0 with 10 stoppages) on Saturday, May 19, at the Town Hall in Malvern, Australia.

This is Claveras’ first major international title fight this year after a split decision loss last year against Japanese Keisuke Nakayama for the OPBF Flyweight belt.

The 28-year-old Negrense challenger won his first major title in 2015 when he defeated Jerry Tomogdan by unanimous decision to claim World Boxing Council International Light Flyweight title.

Claveras, however, yielded the belt two months later to Filipino compatriot Jonathan Refugio by unanimous decision.

Later in the same year, he also lost in the WBC World Light Flyweight title fight against Mexico’s Pedro “Pedrin” Guevara.

The Filipino challenger said he is grateful for this opportunity to be in the international arena once again and carry the Filipino spirit.

“We have prepared well for this fight and hopeful to succeed,” he said.

Moloney, who is defending his crown for the 8th time, recently moved up to No.5 in latest WBA World ratings.

He admitted said that Claveras is a strong fighter. “He has a come forward style and lets his hands go, so I’m sure the fans will be in for a real treat on May 19,” the Australian champion said.
