Overcoming disabilities

SELDOM can we see a person who is willing to serve his fellowmen, much more someone who is tied to a wheelchair.

That’s why Fife Vanice L. Dayola, 23, stands out among the rest in the recently-concluded Sangguniang Kabataan elections in Barangay 21-C. She won as SK kagawad and at number one at that.

“Bane” as she is fondly called by her friends and neighbors was born with her disability that had tied her to a wheelchair all her life. But this did not hinder her to pursue her dream of serving her fellow youths in Barangay Opicore.

Born to and raised by a single mother, Rowena, who earns a meager income by working as a helper in a carinderia, this young lady has noble goals she wants to achieve now that she has won the position she aspired for.

“I want to help persons with disability like me in their hospitalization, I want to give them assistance that they need however I can, and also the out of school youths,” she said.

She credited her neighbor, Jhun Cambonga, for encouraging her to run as SK kagawad.

“He (encouraged me), along with my dream to help the barangay initiate programs especially for PWDs like me,” she said.

She admitted being hesitant to seek an SK council seat, but the encouragement of friends and family and prayers made her decide to take on the challenge.

“Dili siguro sa physical na buhat, pero gamiton nako akong utok sa maayo nga paraan aron mapalambo ang among barangay, (It might not be through physical activity, but I will use my brain in a good way to improve our barangay),” the new SK kagawad said.

“Maskin elementary graduate lang ko pero kabalo ko unsay mali o tama ug unsay angay buhaton ug dili angayan buhaton (Even if I’m only an elementary graduate I know what is right or wrong and I know what I should do and what I should not)," she said.

She said she attended Alternative Learning System (ALS) at Sta. Ana National High School in school year 2016-2017 but had to drop out because of the financial difficulties of her family.

This lady knows how difficult it is to be living with disability, that’s why the only thing she aspires for now is to help the PWDs in her barangay lessen the burden they are carrying, and to make the Out of School Youth be productive.
