Barangay and SK Elections

Barangay and SK Elections

Finally, after being postponed several times, the last Barangay and Sangguniang elections having been held in 2013, a new mandate has finally been given.

New and re-electionist barangay captains, SK chairmen, and councilors (kagawad) will hold the post in the 182 barangays of Davao City for two years.

For five years, barangay officials remained in their posts after Congress ratified the bills suspending the elections from the original 2016 to 2018. It was also a long eight years wait for SK elections after several changes have been made in the system to make the SK more corruption-free and not be the breeding ground for political dynasties.

In general, the Davao City Police Office declared a peaceful elections in the city despite an election-related riot in Barangay 23-C Isla Verde on the eve of elections between the supporters of the incumbent Barangay Captain Alemudin Usman and Amilbangsa Manding injuring at least three people.

With the altercation, several units of the Philippine National Police, SWAT and the Task Force Davao were deployed in the area to safeguard the polling precincts. It was one of the election hot spots that had a close watch by the authorities, but also Daniel R. Aguinaldo National High School in Matina Crossing also had a fair share of spotlight not only by the media and police but also for the spectators waiting for the Dutertes to vote.

At around 10 a.m., Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio cast her vote in the precinct she shares with her father President Rodrigo Duterte. School administration brought out the chair used by the President during the 2016 election in casting his vote but it remained unused for the rest of the day. President Duterte was a no show that day. Former Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte also failed to vote as he was out of the country.

This dismayed several people who were hoping to catch a glimpse of the popular president.

As the 3 p.m. bell rang marking the end of the elections, even the tellers were saddened by the President's absence.

Just to be part of history several spectators went inside the precinct to take a picture sitting on the chair before this was brought out again for safekeeping.

After several years of waiting and one day of election, the winning candidates will have two years to serve. The newly elected Barangay and SK officials will now go back to the community to serve the people and fulfill their campaign promises. We hope.
