Family of rape suspect to press charges vs arresting cops

THE family of the rape suspect who died inside the prison cell of police station 2 in Cogon, Cagayan de Oro City, is pressing administrative and criminal charges against the three arresting policemen.

Neresa Candelansa, common-law partner of the suspect Christopher Campredondo Friday, May 18, said they already sought help from the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) for the filing of appropriate charges on what they believed as police brutality.

Camporedondo was arrested last May 3 for allegedly molesting an eight-year-old girl in Barangay Indahag, this city. He died hours after his arrest.

Candelansa said the autopsy result came out saying Camporedondo died of blunt traumatic head injury.

"Ang ingon sa doktor nga baka may matigas na bakal na pinalo sa ulo ibabaw sa dalonggan kay nag hemorrhage man. Naa pu'y lagom sa iyang kuto-kuto," Candelansa said.

Candelansa believed that her husband was beaten by the arresting police personnel whom she identified as Senior Police Officer (SPO)1 Jey Ramos, SPO1 Jenefer Husayan and a certain SPO2 Engito.

She said Camporedondo told her in tears that he was beaten when she visited her husband at the detention facility.

But, Superintendent Mardy Hortillosa II, spokesperson of the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo), said the autopsy report is not a confirmation that the arresting police officers did beat the suspect during the arrest.

He maintained that there is no foul play based on the police investigation.

However, it will be up for the court to decide once the case is elevated in court.

"Nag-submit og report ang police pero dili to confirmation nga nakuha sa bunal sa police ang hinungdan sa pagkamatay kay basin nabunal ba kaha ang iyang ulo or natumba unya nabunal diha nana magdaog sa korte basta ang findings sa police walay foul play," Hortillosa said.

Candelansa said the Regional Internal Affairs Service in Camp Alagar had already secured their statement on Wednesday, May 16.

"Gusto pud sa relatives sa akong bana nga ipadayon ang kaso aron makab-ot namo ang hustisya," she said.
