THE inmates of Negros Occidental District Jail (NODJ) in Bago City are selling broomsticks as part of their livelihood project inside the jail.

Jail Officer 2 Juniven Rey Umadhay, public information officer of NODJ, said the "walis-making project" was an initiative of Chief Inspector Castle Masip, jail warden, after learning that one of the inmates is a skilled laborer in a "walis-making" family business prior to his detention.

The jail then started to finance a small amount to start the business and linked individuals who would provide materials for the project. Each broomstick costs P120.

They started to sell these broomsticks last April and currently, they are working on their second batch.

At present, the jail management is looking for a market that can help the noble livelihood project of the inmates sell these broomsticks.

Interested buyers can visit the jail.

The San Carlos City District Jail already bought 32 broomsticks.

Umadhay said the proceeds of the project will benefit the jail and the inmates.

The Metro Bacolod District Jail (MBDJ)-Female Dormitory in Barangay Handumanan, Bacolod City also invites everyone to come and see the "Inmate's livelihood Exhibit" of the Diocese of Bacolod at the second floor of Robinsons Place Bacolod.

The exhibit showcases the artistry and craftsmanship of female inmates in crafting bead wallets, coin purse, keychains, bags, ballpen holders and also displays from other jails in the province. The exhibit will be until May 21.
