What senior high school track suits you?

THIS year saw the first batch of senior high school graduates after the shift to the K to 12 system two years ago. Designed to give students a taste of what their future career paths will be like, senior high school goes beyond academics as it also adds practical skills training that equips a student to be workforce-ready.

But with many paths available for incoming seniors, which one particularly should they consider? “Students should first think about which industry they wish to work in and choose a path that helps them get there,” advises Dr. Amable R. Aguiluz V, founder and chairman of AMAES, the country’s largest network of schools that offers senior high school.

Based on data from their network, AMAES shares the top three senior high school tracks to consider. These courses are versatile as these not only lead to possible jobs, they also open the gateway for further education upon graduation.

The track: Information Technology (IT)

Why consider it? The IT pathway for senior high school students expand their understanding of digital technology. While learning the basics of computing and programming, they also get a sense of the different careers in the IT space. And with courses being more hands-on, they also equip themselves to be immediately employable upon graduation.

The track: Business and Accountancy

Why consider it? Being an entrepreneur is innate among Filipinos. In a recent survey conducted by cloud platform company GoDaddy, 77 percent of Filipinos have or had a side business on top of their full time jobs. Of these, 72 percent eventually want to become their own boss.

But starting an income generating endeavor means understanding the basic concepts like supply and demand and balancing income versus expenses. Through the business and accountancy track, students get these concepts ingrained in them—equipping them with the knowledge to become entrepreneurs.

The track: Skill-Based

Why consider it? Not all students are academically inclined. Some learn better through practical application. Skill-based tracks give high school seniors the chance to study in a more hands-on setting. Things like basic auto-mechanics, culinary, and web development are about skill development. According to data from Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), 7 out of 10 graduates of these types of courses find work easily, too.

Senior High School has given students a choice of whether to pursue academics, or skill-based endeavors and AMAES schools offer different tracks for both in their campuses nationwide. They also offer Blended Learning options that divides time between the classroom and learning at their own pace and convenience online.

“We believe that students should have the power of choice and at AMA schools, we have different course options so that high school seniors can take their desired educational path,” adds Dr. Aguiluz.
