Commercial hog production up in Davao provinces

DAVAO del Sur’s backyard hog production declined by 65.93 percent, but commercial hog production more than double as it increased by 153.65 percent as of April 1, 2018, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

PSA data showed that backyard hogs went down to 88,369 heads as of April 1, 2018 from 259,364 as of April 1, 2017.

Commercially-grown hogs in Davao del Sur, on the other hand, went up by 153.65 percent to 42,631 heads from 16,807 hogs in the same period.

Commercial hog production in Davao del Norte province also increased by 126.34 percent to 82,324 heads from only 36,372 heads.

Davao Oriental is also now commercially growing 14,234 heads of hogs when last year they were only able to produce 1,465 heads.

In the entire Davao Region, total hog production as of April 1 of this year went up by 2.19 percent to 895,740 heads as compared to last year’s record of 876,511 hogs.

Most of the hogs grown in the region are backyard-raised. As of April 1 of this year, there were 748,308 backyard-grown hogs in the region compared to 728,976 heads in the same period last year.

Most of the backyard hogs produced in the region this year are from Davao Oriental with 275,889 recorded heads, followed by Davao del Norte and Davao City with 137,774 and 126,436 backyard hogs, respectively. Compostela Valley, on the other hand, has 119,840 backyard-grown hogs.

Commercially-grown hogs in Davao Region slightly decreased to 147,432 heads from 147,535 in April 1 of 2017.

Davao City recorded a decline of 98.62 percent in commercially-grown hogs as the city had only 1,172 hogs as of April 1 of this year compared to 85,095 heads as of April 1 of last year.
