Federalism advocates want to join 2019 party-list elections

A GROUP that’s pushing for a change to a federal government wants to be accredited as a party-list group so that they can compete in the May 2019 elections.

The National Alliance of Movements for Federalism (NAMFED) expects that efforts to amend the 1987 Constitution will go beyond the mid-term election, officials said in a recent meeting of the Political Officers League of the Philippines (Polphil) in Cebu with Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Danilo Lim.

Lim is NAMFED chair, while Tuburan Mayor Democrito Diamante, president of the League of Municipalities in the Philippines Cebu Chapter, is a member of the Cebu Movement for Federalism chaired by Cordova Mayor Teresa Sitoy-Cho.

Lim confirmed that NAMFED has asked the Commission on Elections for recognition as the party-list group Nagkakaisang Alyansa ng Masa sa Fedralism. He said the group has won pledges of support from mayors in six political districts in Cebu.

Secretary General Rodolfo Cañeda said that NAMFED, which filed its petition with the poll body last April 30, is a coalition of NAMFED, Genlim Inc. and Abante Boholano Inc.

Party-list groups that win at least two percent of the votes cast in the party-list elections are entitled to a seat in the House of Representatives. (EOB)
