Editorial: ‘Wanbol University’ alumnus now a Senate leader

FEW days after the reports came out last week that reorganization in the Senate is imminent, Senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto III was sworn in Monday, May 21 as the country's 29th Senate President.

This came after Senator Aquilino Pimentel III stepped down from his post after 15 of his colleagues ousted him.

He was ousted by Senators Nancy Binay, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Gringo Honasan, Ralph Recto, Juan Edgardo Angara, Francis Escudero, Joel Villanueva, Loren Legarda, Cynthia Villar, Joseph Victor Ejercito Estrada, Lacson, Sherwin Gatchalian, Manny Pacquiao, Richard Gordon, and Grace Poe.

Pimentel had called on the Supreme Court to review its decision after it granted on May 11 the quo warranto petition that invalidated the appointment of then Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

Going back to Sotto.

He expressed gratitude to his colleagues for giving him the opportunity to serve as senate chief.

He also assured his colleagues and the public that he is committed to do his best to serve the Filipino people.

Sotto also said with the help of his colleagues and the Filipino people, he is confident he has in his background the template of nine other Senate Presidents that he had served.

He said the knowledge gained in his school is no match to the knowledge and experience that he gained from the previous Senate Presidents.

Sotto, who had been earlier accused of plagiarism for using articles without crediting his sources, is a notable alumnus of Wanbol University.

Wanbol University, for the benefit of the young ones, is a fictional university in the TV sitcom “Iskul Bukol,” which starred the good senator.

On the other hand, Pimentel, a bar topnotcher, is the president of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), the party of President Rodrigo Duterte.

With Sotto as Senate President and a supermajority in the House of Representatives, God bless the Philippines.
