Driver, who ran over child, freed

THE armored vehicle driver detained for accidentally running over a two-year-old child was ordered released by the court on Monday afternoon, May 21, less than two weeks after the accident.

Gregorio Antonio Vito Jr., 23, was issued a release order after the court dismissed the charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide against him.

San Pedro Police Station commander Chief Inspector Ramil Macarampat said the case was dismissed after the parents of Loviege Pangantihon signed an affidavit of desistance on Tuesday, May 15, citing that they were no longer interested in pursuing the case against Vito..

It can be recalled that on May 10, the victim was killed after he was ran over by an armored car owned by the Davao Security and Investigation Agency Inc. (Dasia) as he crossed the pedestrian lane on San Pedro Street. The driver said he thought the mother and the toddler had completely crossed the street.

A video of the incident, which went viral, showed that the vehicle was moving slowly when the mother and the kid crossed the street. The mother was holding her son but the child suddenly let go of his mother's hand and backtracked. It was too late when the mother noticed that her son ran off.

Due to the limited view of the armored car, the driver said he did not see the boy.
