Cebu City, Mandaue in semifinals

CEBU City and Mandaue City advanced to the Women’s Division semifinals of the Philippine National Games (PNG) volleyball tournament after finishing with the top two spots in Pool A.

Cebu City completed a sweep in Pool A after beating Tacloban City in three sets – 25-17, 25-17 and 25-17 – yesterday in the University of San Carlos (USC) Main Gym.

Mandaue City, on the other hand, bounced back from a default loss to Cebu City the other day and beat Makati City in three sets – 25-15, 25-16 and 25-22.

Cebu City clinched the top seed with a 3-0 slate, while Mandaue City got the other slot in Pool A with a 2-1 record.

Meanwhile, Cagayan de Oro City beat Zamboanga City to take the lone leadership of Pool B of the Women’s Division.

Cagayan de Oro City won over Zamboanga City with scores of 25-15, 25-20 and 25-23.

Bayawan City was still playing against Pagadian City as of press time in the other Pool B match.

In the Men’s Division, Cebu City also clinched a spot in the quarterfinals after a win over Cagayan de Oro in Pool A.

Cebu City defeated Cagayan de Oro with scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-20 and 25-21.

Makati City, Tacloban City, Iligan City and Bayawan City also advanced into the quarterfinals.

Iligan City won against Pagadian City (25-16, 25-22, 25-16), while Bayawan City didn’t break a sweat and walked away with a default victory over South Cotabato in Pool B.

Makati City beat Taguig City (25-17, 25-14, 25-16), while Tacloban City defeated San Carlos City (25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-15) in Pool C.

Cebu Province and Davao City earlier clinched a spot in the quarterfinals and will be taking on each other for positioning in Pool D today.

The remaining elimination matches will be played today along with the 7th and 8th place match and the 5th and 6th place match. (EKA)
