Capitol organizes a forum on cyberporn

A FORUM on cyberpornography will take place on June 1.

Organized by the Cebu Provincial Government, the forum aims to highlight the ongoing efforts of local government units (LGUs) in Cebu in their campaign against cyberpornography, especially in areas where this is reported, said Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale.

Plans for the forum came after a week after a 30-year-old woman was arrested in Barangay Sangat, San Fernando for using her daughter and other children to engage in cybersex with pedophiles.

Cynthia (not her real name) has been charged with violating Republic Act (RA) 9208, or the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act, and RA 9775, or the Anti-Child Pornography Act in relation to RA 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

Magpale, who chairs the Provincial Women’s Commission (PWC), said the forum aims to alert the community and other stakeholders about the problem.

The speakers will include representatives from the International Justice Mission, Philippine National Police, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Magpale called on LGUs to be vigilant against cyberporn as operators are expanding their business in other areas in the province.

But she also praised the private sector, particularly money transfer firms, that report to law enforcers clients who may be involved in cyberpornography. (JKV)
